Gujar Mal Modi Award for Innovative Science & Technology 2012


July 23, 2012, New Delhi: The Gujar Mal Modi Award for Innovative Science & Technology for 2012 will be conferred to two internationally renowned scientists -- Professor Khadg S. Valdiya and Professor Ajay K. Sood -- for their outstanding contributions in the field of Himalayan Geology, Neotectonics and Environmental Geology; and Physics,  respectively.

The Gujar Mal Modi Science Foundation said in a release that the awards will be presented by P. Chidambaram, Union Minister of Home Affairs at a function on August 7 at Sri Satya Sai Auditorium in Lodhi Road at 6 pm. The occasion also marks the 110th birth anniversary of Late Gujar Mal Modi.

 The award carries a cash prize of Rs. 2.01 lakh, a scroll of honour and a silver shield.

Prof. KS Valdiya
Prof. KS Valdiya is internationally recognized for his path breaking work in the fields of Geology and Environmental Science. Presently he is an Honorary Professor of Geodynamics at the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, Bangalore. He has served as a Member of the Science Advisory Committee to the Cabinet of the Prime Minister (1983–1988), influencing National policy on Science and Environment. For the last few years, Prof. KS Valdiya has been working on a Science Outreach Programme to popularize Science among young students in the remote regions of Uttarakhand. He is also the Fellow of the three National Science Academies of India, the Third World Academy of Sciences, the Geological Society of America and the Geological Society of Nepal.

Prof. AK Sood
Prof. AK Sood is widely recognized professionally for his contributions in India and by the TWAS (Fellow and Physics Prize). He is currently the President of the Indian Academy of Sciences. Prof. Sood is also serving on various advisory bodies of the Government of India including the Science Advisory Council to the Prime Minister, Science Advisory Committee to the Union Cabinet and the Nanomission of DST. Professor Sood is truly one of the finest experimental physicists of India today making pioneering contributions of very high quality in two areas of condensed matter physics. 

About the Award:
 
The Gujar Mal Modi Innovative Science and Technology Award is the prominent award in the field of Science and Technology. The award was instituted in 1988 in the memory of one of the great industrialists of India, late Rai Bahadur Gujar Mal Modi. It is given each year to a person who has demonstrated the qualities of excellence and innovation through outstanding research and providing leadership in the development and promotion of Science and Technology in India
